Saturday Morning:
Section W-3A is taking an entirely different approach to Training in 2008. This year, we are separating participant into eleven distinct groups. Each participant will choose one group to affiliate with for training purposes. These groups are based on your role or interests in the OA and our goal is to provide training tailored to fit your individual needs and focusing on this year’s conclave theme of ‘Membership Retention’.
Please choose one Training group from the list below. This will be your assigned Training group at the conclave.
Youth Only
- Chiefs and Vice-Chiefs (Lodge or Chapter)
- This group will spend most of their time having discussions on how their role as a chief, or vice-chief, relates to membership retention, and what they can do to improve it. This discussion will also include: how to run successful events and keeping things fun, how communication is important, and ideas form other lodges on how to keep Arrowmen coming back. If you are a Chief or Vice-Chief of a Lodge or Chapter this is the group for you!
- Troop or Team Representatives
- This group will participate in the Troop Rep training program, discuss how their job is important in having Arrowmen return to lodge events and will also discuss how the OA might help with member retention in their home units. This group is for any youth that are, or are thinking of becoming Troop/Team Reps.
- Lodge Marketing
- In this Group participants will spend time looking at communications and promotions and the importance of both in membership retention. We will look at traditional ways of communicating, such as newsletters and phone trees, and even ways of using new technology to make these easier. Participants will even discuss really new ways to communicate, such as podcasts, so if you are a Lodge secretary, or work on the lodge website, or on the newsletter staff this is the group for you.
- Unit Leadership
- As everyone knows, an Arrowmen’s first duty is to his home unit and this group will help those Scouts who have a leadership role in their troop. This group will help develop leadership skills of unit leadership and help with unit’s membership retention problems. In this group you will explore the possibilities for the OA to help units and units help the OA, and how both can improve membership retention.
- Older Scouts
- If you already have your brotherhood and you aren’t in lodge leadership, but you come to Conclave for fun and to be with friends, then this group is for you. Learn about all of the great opportunities for older Arrowmen that the Order of the Arrow has to offer and the very important role you play in your units, chapters and lodges back home.

Both youth and adult groups are:
- New Arrowmen (have not received brotherhood)
- This group will mainly focus on the Journey to Brotherhood and how it relates to membership retention. The group will also have the opportunity meet the national officers who come to Conclave. Adults will also discuss the role of the adult in the Order of the Arrow and the important role they play.
- Ceremonies
- This group with both the ceremonialist and ceremony team coaches will go into depth about the meanings of the Pre-Ordeal and Ordeal Ceremonies. You will also learn about ceremonial progression, and how impressive ceremonies could lead to Arrowmen coming back to be on the Ceremonial team.
- Elangomat Training
- If you are an Adviser, or youth in charge Elangomats, or even if you have been or might be an Elangomat this group is perfect for you. You will go through a model Elangomat Training, and discuss how being an Elangomat could lead to membership retention.
Adult groups are:
- Advisers 5+ years
- Hosted by the Order of the Arrow Western Region Chairman, this group will center gathering the year’s of experience advisers have and develop ideas to improve membership retention in our lodges.
- Advisors 1-4 years
- This group will discuss some of the basics of the OA, from the structure and organization, to how to be an effective committee adviser, as well as the role of the adviser. The group will also discuss ideas to improve membership retention in our lodges.
